William A. Campbell died at Chester, Friday morning, June 9, 1905, aged 57 years, 4 months and 27 days. He was talking with friends on the street when he suddenly fell and expired almost instantly. Heart failure was the cause of death assigned by the coroner’s jury. Mr. Campbell was a citizen of Randolph County all his life and was well know, having held the offices of sheriff and county treasurer and several other important positions of trust. At the time of death he was cashier of the _____ Bank of Chester. His last official position was clerk of the criminal asylum at Chester under Gov. Altgeld. He leaves surviving a young son, his wife, who was the daughter of the late Judge Samuel C. McKee of Blair precinct, having preceded him to the grave several years. His brother A. J. Campbell _______ well and favorably known as a citizen of this county now resides in Carbondale. The remains were brought to the home of his niece, Mrs. Alfred K. Wilson, in this city Friday evening. The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, conducted by Rev. Ralph Atkinson, pastor of the U.P. church, and was largely attended, many friends from Chester, Evansville, Red Bud and other points in the county being present, and many floral contributions attested the esteem in which he was held by intimate associates. The interment was at Union cemetery.
