Fort Charters Landing was just south of the original fort, it is believed to have been the supply landing for the area. Nothing remains today.
Fort Charters Village, there is a debate about where this actually was. But when the old fort was abandoned the Michigan Indians built a village near the old original fort. Under a Jesuit Priest, the Michigan Indians moved their village to the new fort. When the English took over the Indians left and there were about 40 French families in the village. The village was also known as New Charters. But in 1967 a site about 1 mile from the fort is believed to have been the site of this village.
Boisbriant built Fort Charters (the original one) in 1720. It was 17 miles NW of Kaskaskia and about 4 miles from Prairie du Rocher. In 1724 the river washed away part of the land around the fort. A second fort was built in 1732. A third fort was built in 1756. In 1766 the Fort passed to the British. In 1772 the old fort completely flooded and the British moved to the bluffs. The fort was also called Fort Cavendisht. It is actually located in T5 R10.
