WALLACE, Lemuel Adolphus. Looking for info on my great grandfather, Lemuel Adolphus WALLACE, born February 15, 1864, possibly in Sparta, IL. We think that he and a younger brother ran away from home when he was about 7 years old. Father is just listed as WALLACE on his death certificate, mother as Emma REED. Any help greatly appreciated.

When I married my wife in Sparta in 1948 The town was only about 3600 people. and I know that many small towns did not have city directories but I have my fingers crossed. Uncle Leroy(Roy)Putnam may have worked for the MO. Pacific RR. there. Associated surnames: Chism, McIntyre

I searching for information on ggrandmother, Lulu L. "Lottie" Johnson, who on Feb. 24, 1893 married, Frank S. Douglas in Randolph Co., Il. She was 20 years old at that time, supposedly born in Randolph Co., Il. but can find no record of birth. Story goes that she was orphaned, possibly around the age of 15 yrs. old. Where was she left? She, then, came to live with Catherine Douglas, helped her with the work at the boarding house and later married Catherine Douglas' son, Frank. Frank and Lottie had 3 children: Durant (m. Anna), Katrine (m. Howard Burns) and Lyle (m. Wanda Hurst). Recorded wedding certificate shows Lottie's parents as George Johnson and Mary Sanders. Where are the decendents of these two families-Johnson and Sanders Where did they originate and why was Lottie orphaned? Lottie had an older sister (poss. half sister), Mable Julia, who had a son, Charley. I have old photos. Mable married a (?)Ritter. Any help would be appreciated by the ggranddaughters, Yvonne, Mary Susan and Sondra. Thank you. Thank you. E-mail me at [email protected]

I am looking for descendents of Savinien St. Vrain and his wife Francoise Virginie Menard. All I know about Francoise is that she is described as "a member of one of the most conspicuous families in the history of the West", that she had eight children with Savinien and that she passed away in 1853. Also she married Savinien on February 24, 1830 at Kaskaskia. Savinien St. Vrain was elected Treasurer of Randolph County in 1846, was elected Sheriff in 1850, 1852 and 1856, and was elected Circuit Clerk in 1860, which position he held for sixteen years. He died July 22, 1830. After Francoise died, he married Virginia Guthrie and appears to have had two children with her. I have the names of their children and some birth dates but that is all. I would like to invite any descendents to a new family website I have set up. Any information regarding this family will be most appreciated! Thanks.

Milligan family. I am researching a Milligan family that is found in Christian Co., IL. Postings on Ancestry suggest that the patriarch of this family is a David MILLIGAN who was born about 1760 and died about 1830 in Sparta, Randolph Co., IL. David Milligan had issue: Sarah; Fergus; James; David; Hezediah; William; Elvira; Mary; & Martha. My line is a David Milligan born about 1835 in IL; he spouse if found on the census as Rachel. David is the son of a widow named Sarah Milligan (born c1802; IL) and enumerated in the Mount Auburn District of Christian Co., IL in 1850. The only Milligan in Christian Co. in 1840 is a Forgus (i.e. Fergus) Milligan. I believe this is the same man who is the son of David Milligan of Randolph Co., IL and the same man who removed to Perry Co., IL by 1850; he died in 1857. Can anyone help?

Is there any proof that Dr. William Samuel Rutger ever came to this county? Did he die here? Could he have moved to Wayne County, Illinois and purchased the land there rather than the 12 year old by that name? The purchaser could more likely have been John’s father William S. RUTGER who had moved on to Randolph County (ninety miles from this land where he was likely needed for his medical experience) and perhaps did not die as the PA source suggests in 1845, but simply left the County to live temporilarily with his son, purchased this land and died soon after?? Still searching for family of McKinsey Johnson in Randolph County. Now have a few new leads. He was living in a household in Randolph County headed by Henry Johnson from Delaware. Also in this home were James and Richard Duke Johnson aged five and six. Keeping house for them was Sarah Johnson Hindman, daughter of Brinkley Johnson of Delaware. The census lists McKinsey as twelve years old at the time, but of unknown relation. In searching for Brinkley Johnson in Delaware, I find that there were three men with that name at the same time in Delaware. At least two of them served in the War of 1812. One served in Saptain Stout's Company and another in the 9 Regiment, Delaware Militia in 1813. If any of these names ring a bell, please contact me. We were told that McKinsey was also related to the Steel or Steele family in some way. In searching the Johnson's in Delaware in search of Henry, Sarah or Brinkley, I found several instances of Johnson and Steel marriages. Did both families come to Randolph County together? Would like to know if anyone else knows of any of these marriages.

I am interested in information about James THOMPSON. I am working on my Master’s thesis, which has to do with people who worked as surveyors for the General Land Office during the years 1837-1841. Thompson was a resident of Randolph County (presumably Kaskaskia) during this time period, and also served as probate judge and county surveyor. His son John P. Thompson worked with him, along with an Archibald C. Thompson who may or may not be his son. I am hoping to find the following information: year and place of birth; year of arrival in Illinois; what other work he did; year and place of death; and where buried. What I would consider a goldmine is if I locate a descendent who may be in possession of letters written by him which refer to his work as a surveyor. In return, I would be happy to share any information I have gathered so far on him, and can send along photocopies from the field notes he kept as surveyor (available on microfilm at the Illinois State Archives).

My McLaughlins in Randolph were there for a very short time, but I think they may be majorly linked through this county. My James C. McLaughlin was born in Ireland in 1816, and his wife Anne Eliza Lyons was born in Ireland in 1815. They were married in 1840, probably in Ireland, and they came to the United States apparently around 1845, although I haven't proven that through ship records. Their stay in Randolph supposedly was from 1845-48. Their only three children at the time all died in the year 1847, according to family bible records I found at the LDS in Salt Lake City, so I suppose they would be buried in Randolph Co. somewhere. This family moved to Marion County, Illinois in 1848, where the rest of their children were born from 1849 on. Their children married into the Morton and Parkinson, Storment families, with Blairs in the backgrounds of these families too. My family was of the Scotch Covenenter faith. Now, the reason I have posted this query is not really because this family spent alot of time in Randolph, but because I know of the background of Randolph coming from Chester County, SC and Tennessee in the earlier 1800s. I have heard that there were a few other Randolph County McLaughlins and I'm hoping to find the links to them some how. I have a feeling that with the religious connection with so many of these families, that any McLaughlin is probably somehow related to me. I do not, however, know the name of any of James C. McLaughlin's siblings or parents, although there is a strong possibility that his mother's name was Eliza. Anyway, if any of you have McLaughlins in Randolph, please, let's share info.

I have reason to believe that the husband of a gggrandaunt spent some time (maybe as much as ten years) in the state penitentiary. I am looking for several things: 1) where was the men's state penitentiary located (in the 1840's to 1860's)? 2) were the inmates counted in censuses? 3) If not, does anyone know how I could best go about finding out if this relative did time there? Thank you for your time and assistance. [I am a volunteer for Clay County and would be glad to help anyone who is looking for any Clay County, IL information.]

Surnames: REDPATH LIVELY BURLINGAME
Submitter: Tracy Crain ([email protected])
Date: 04 Jan 1999

Looking for any information regarding MARGARET REDPATH LIVELY. Her parents are JOHN LIVELY and MOLLY ROBINSON. I have reason to suspect that Margaret was adopted: (1) In 1822, a James Redpath settled in Heacock Prairie, Randolph County, Illinois. This could be her father. (2) In the 1850 Sparta-Eden census, there is a Maria Redpath, age 11, living with the BURLINGAME family, along with three blacksmiths (Mr. Burlingame was also a blacksmith). Maria Redpath could be a sister. I do not know the age of Margaret Redpath Lively, but I am very curious as to her heritage. Any information is appreciated.
